Welcome to Class R

Our main aim in Class R is for the children to have a happy and exciting start to school life. Within the classroom we follow the Early years foundation stage curriculum which recognises that children learn best through play and active learning. The children learn skills, acquire new knowledge and demonstrate their understanding through 7 areas of learning and development. These are Communication and Language, Physical development, Personal social and emotional development, Numeracy, Literacy, Understanding the world and Expressive arts and design. Learning takes place within these areas through a mixture of adult lead and child initiated activities. Throughout the year an emphasis is placed on the children gaining more independence, creating relationships with adults and peers and developing a love of learning.

At Hartwell we teach children to become confident and imaginative writers. Writing is a complex skill involving many different processes including pencil control, good ideas and correct spelling. The writing process begins in the Early Years and is developed when home and school work together. In the first term at school we hold two workshops, Let’s Read and Let’s Write
